Once inhabited by the Brahmins Paliwal, of which the place takes its name, an ancient Pali is an advanced civilization. The land was rented to the Paliwals by the then head of Mandore (the ancient capital of Jodhpur district), who cultured with care, leaving their former priestly profession.
Being a hardworking and intelligent tribe, it soon became rich and was set at the head of Marwar in the moment, Raja Sheoji. Want to fill their coffers for the battles ahead Sheoji imposed a levy war against the inhabitants of Pali in 1243AD. He refused to pay, demanding the exemption under the pretext that they were the Brahmins.
The furious king threw some of its leaders in prison, in reprisal, and passed an edict ordering the death of all residents who do not cough Pali the war tax.
Sheoji persecution forced the Paliwals to flee, which they did lock stock and barrel to Jaisalmer, to Pali resembled a ghost town.

Nowadays the major attraction of Pali are three exquisite temples, namely the Hatundi Rata Mahabir Temple, the Ranakpur Jain Temple and the Surya Narayan Temple (the first has been covered by Pali, while the other two have been covered by Ranakpur separately).
